More than a hundred teams, a Baltic Sea beach and a beach party that lasts longer than some matches: the Damper Beachcup is one of the biggest amateur tournaments in northern Germany – and for Berlin players a weekend well worth the drive. Here is how it works, who it suits and what to bring.
A short look at the setup right by the water – beach, courts and the atmosphere between matches.
What makes the Damper Beachcup special
The Damper Beachcup describes itself as a “tournament for everyone”. Anyone who wants to play may play – professional experience is not required. There are women’s, men’s and mixed draws on several courts directly on the Baltic beach of the Ostsee-Resort Damp.
That sets it apart from most tournaments in Berlin: this is not about ranking points but about a full weekend with tents on the beach, a shared breakfast and a party between the two match days. Anyone who has ever walked to their first Sunday match with sand still in their shoes knows why people come back every year.
The schedule at a glance
| Friday | Teams arrive from 6 pm, tents go up on the beach, warm-up party at the action beach from 8 pm |
| Saturday | Breakfast from 8.30 am, check-in with the organisers from 9 am, first matches at 10 am, group stage ends around 5 pm, beach party at the Damper Beachbar from 8 pm |
| Sunday | Breakfast from 8.30 am, play resumes at 10 am, awards around 3 pm, then packing up and heading home |

Who is the trip worth it for?
In our experience Damp works well from intermediate amateur level upwards. You should be able to receive, set and put the ball over the net under control – on our scale roughly from A3. If you are still at the very beginning, the rallies stay too short to be fun.
There is plenty of room upwards: the top draws include teams at F level. Because several skill classes play in parallel, you will usually find opponents that suit you.
Wind: the factor Berliners underestimate
In Berlin we mostly play sheltered between trees and buildings. On the Baltic coast the wind crosses the court unbroken – and that changes everything. High sets get blown away, the float serve becomes a weapon, and choosing sides can decide a set. A few sessions in windy conditions beforehand will help you more in Damp than any extra technique lesson.

What to bring
- A settled team. Two days of tournament leave no room for debates about the line-up.
- Tent and sleeping gear if you want to stay on the beach – otherwise book accommodation at the resort early.
- Sun protection and a cap. On the coast the wind makes people underestimate the sun.
- Plenty to drink. Two tournament days quickly add up to several litres.
- Energy for the party. It belongs to the tournament – Sunday still starts at 10 am.
Getting there from Berlin
Damp lies on the Baltic coast in Schleswig-Holstein, north of Eckernförde. By car it is roughly four to four and a half hours from Berlin. Since the tournament starts on Friday evening, it pays to travel together as a team and take the Friday off – you arrive relaxed and set up in peace.
Ready for the tournament?
Two tournament days in the wind are a different matter from an after-work game in Mitte. Our camps train exactly what counts in Damp: reliable reception, serving pressure and game understanding in a team of two – in groups by level from A1 to F3.
